(Gallery) Bacteria and Bone Loss
- Note how disseminating oral infections can erode a patients heart valves.
- Brushing diseased gums must be done forcefully with about 5 – 6 lbs of force directed into the soft tissue. Caveat: This is counter intuitive and uncomfortable the first 3 -4 days but a scientifically valid approach to oral hygiene.
- You can see in this picture your toothbrush can reach shallow gum infections but not periodontal infections in the supporting bone.
- Germs which cause bone infection are invisible unless stained with vegetable dyes.
- Stained to better show the bacteria.
- Only a periodontal probe can diagnose gum disease. X-Rays cannot diagnose bone infection.
